Ha sorprendido en la medida que el propio paciente supo soportar con dignidad la dolencia que le llevaría a la muerte. Jamás escondió la realidad, pero tampoco hizo bandera de ella. Extrajo conclusiones de y ante la muerte que se le avecinaba y supo transmitirlas. Hizo ideología. Hasta el final, Enrique Tierno Galván ha sido profesor y maestro. Figura mítica de la oposición al franquismo, el catedrático de Derecho Político, era ante todo un hombre honesto. Luchó contra lo que creía que era injusto y no dudó en tornar partido, a pesar de que ello pudiera reportarle perjuicios. Sufrió prisión por ser europeísta. Fue expulsado de la Universidad por ser demócrata. Mantuvo con rigor su ideología —variasvecesse autodefinió como marxista y fue uno de los principales opositores a que el PSOE renunciara a esta filosofía política—lo que no fue óbice para mostrar siempre un• talante abierto y dialogante, como corresponde a un hombre de su talla intelectual. Ahí queda su profundo y reiterado respeto por los creyentes a pesar de confesarse agnóstico. Como el propio Tierno Galván reconoció en una de sus postreras entrevistas, aceptó ser “la voz de la conciencia” del Partido Socialista Obrero Español, el cual, según él, se estaba olvidando demasiado deprisa de sus.postulados fundamentales. Y también en este papel supo estar con dignidad. y hacerse oír. Y no era esta una función fácil, porque cuando un político está, por las miones que sean, ‘au dessus de la melée”, se corre el riesgo de restar credibilidad a sus manifestaciones. No fue este el caso de Tier no. Sus llamadas a la ortodoxia —“removerlas aguas para que no estanquen”; decía—fueron heçhas siempre desde la reflexión y la inteligencia,con amplitud de miras, conocedor como era de la Don Enrique Gracia o del Barrio Gótico, recibiendo la simpatía e incluso el aplauso —algoinusitado aquí para un político— de los barcelo— servidumbre que el poder siempre lleva consigo. Es una gran noticia que merece un gran titular. Toda celebración de un aniversario periodístico constituye una ocasión para recordar la importancia de la libertad de expresión y de la prensa libre como pilares del sistema democrático. Una democracia plena exige la representación de todas las voces y de todas las ideas. El derecho a la información, a la opinión, a la discrepancia… sólo puede estar garantizado cuando encuentra los canales de expresión adecuados. Y los medios de comunicación constituyen probablemente el mejor vehículo para tal fin. En España, la misión de fortalecer la ciudadanía democrática va pareja a la necesidad de reflejar la pluralidad de los territorios y culturas que conforman la sociedad española. Esta es sin duda una de las asignaturas pendientes de nuestro sistema democrático (probablemente “la” asignatura pendiente): encontrar el punto de equilibrio entre la voluntad de compartir un proyecto de futuro y el reconocimiento a las identidades particulares desde las cuales se realiza esa contribución. Muchos teníamos la esperanza de que la vía constitucional abierta en 1978 pusiera las bases para la solución de este problema. Muchas de las cabeceras que comparten cada mañana el quiosco con El Mundo así lo reflejaron en sus titulares en aquellos años. El espíritu de la democracia, las ganas de entendimiento entre bandos, entre partidos también permitía entrever que había llegado la hora de construir un modelo de concertación territorial el que las viejas disputas dieran paso a la aceptación de la diversidad territorial. Es cierto que la Constitución también abordó esta realidad. Y lo hizo de forma suficientemente hábil, dejando los elementos necesarios para que la solución se fuera dibujando poco a poco, al mismo tiempo que la democracia se iba consolidando. Luego, el 23-F y sus consecuencias torcerían el curso de la historia, quizá no irremisiblemente. No obstante, no deja de llamar la atención la persistencia de argumentos y tópicos, en uno y otro lado, que impiden enfocar directamente los problemas y ofrecerles soluciones adecuadas y pertinentes. Argumentos que nos retrotraen a discursos igualmente periclitados. �En este sentido, la prensa española tiene por delante una importante misión de pedagogía. El Mundo ofrece, desde su edición catalana, una visión propia de lo que acontece en la política y la sociedad catalanas. Nos propone una lectura diferente de nuestra realidad y practica su compromiso por aportar transparencia en las instituciones públicas. Ambos aspectos configuran un modelo periodístico perfectamente identificable con El Mundo desde que la empresa editora decidiera poner en marcha esta iniciativa hace diez años. El Mundo no ha dejado de seguir la evolución de la realidad política catalana, ofreciendo una perspectiva específica, con la que no siempre he coincidido plenamente, pero que siempre he respetado. Una manera de entender el periodismo que demuestra día a día que la controversia y la discrepancia son los valores que ayudan a consolidar la pluralidad de ideas y en definitiva, la democracia. Constituyen por ello el necesario punto de arranque hacia el diálogo y la concordia. La contribución de El Mundo a esta labor ha sido constante desde sus inicios. Con perseverancia y convicción, sin duda.
