Ladies and Gentlemen, dear Friends,

Welcome to Barcelona.. I am very glad to meet you in this
Pavillion, which is the result of the collaboration between the
Museum of Modern Art and Barcelona. All of you are familiar with
the important meaning of the Mies van der Rohe Pavillion in the
history of architecture. But I do not know if you are also
familiar with the significance that the 1929 Exhibition has in
the history of Barcelona. The original pavillion was built for
that exhibition. The Exhibition marked the most important thrust
that Barcelona experienced in this century. Our subway system,
the urbanization of this mountain come from those years.

For us Barcelonnians, rebuilding the van der Rohe Pavillion
is a way of recovering a piece of our own history. And I want to
thank the Museum of Modern Art for the help we have got from it.

I hope you find yourselves in Barcelona at home, even those
of you who come here for the first time. I would be very happy of
you felt between us the same comfort I had when I saw for the

first time the Museum of Modern Art. I could see there pieces of
the history of my country I had been deprived of. Your Museum
had sheltered Guernica when this picture could not be in Spain,
as it had also welcomed Luis Buñuel.

In our Picasso Museum you will find some clues to understand
better other . works of Picasso that are in your Museum. The
Demoiselles d'Avignon, for instance, painted as a homage
certain young ladies who worked at a certain house on the Avinyó
street of this city, just a hundred metres of my office at the
City Hall.

I would like that Barcelona could convince you that it was
not because of hazard that a genius as Picasso grew up here.
was not an exception. He was son of an atmosphere of creativity,
of invention, of imagination that this city had that it has
still.

In this same mountain you can see the building.that Josep
Lluis Sert, a catalán who spent many .years and did most of his
work in the United States, made for Joan Miró. And, though I am
not an expert on art, far from it, I think Joan Miro's work is

mediterranean light it manages to gather.

The City Council has been making it best for the last years
to give back to Barcelona the atmosphere, the environement that
made possible such geniuses as Picasso, Miró, Josep Lluis Sert.

You are going to see some of our most recent urbanistic
developments. Some of you know them very well. In our new
squares, in our recovered urban spaces you will find works of
very well known artists, Spanish, American, British. I am glad to
acknowledge here their sensibility to connect with our ideas,
with our plans of providing our urban landscape with a dignity
which was endangered by many years of political irresponsability..

I do hope that this collaboration will go on and extend to
other artists and architects. We want people from

all

the world

to find in Barcelona a place where express themselves. And we
want Barcelona to be present in the world, too. Let me ask for
your help for this purpose.

Have a very good stay with us. Enjoy our city. I am sure
